“Back in 2015, when I weighed in at 233 pounds, I found the idea of going to the gym very intimidating. From past experiences, I knew that I got very bored, very quickly working out on machines and that I was constantly watching the clock the entire time. I needed to find something that could help me get my health back, and I knew I needed it to be fun, not a chore or something I had to force myself to do.
When I saw that my gym was offering Zumba classes, I thought I had to give it a go. I had nothing to lose. I was shocked and really couldn’t believe how much fun I had and how much I enjoyed the class! First of all, the hour went by so quickly – no clock-watching there! The music lifted my spirits and I felt so great after. I saw it more as a dance class than an exercise class.
My instructor, Sacha Penn, is really good at coming up with the best music and choreography. The moves are easy to learn and they work every part of your body. Sometimes we even do an ‘80s theme with glow sticks! It feels like an actual party.
I love that Zumba classes break up the boredom of the regular gym. It’s nice to walk in every week and see the same people you have a connection with. No one feels out of place or embarrassed. It’s like we have all become family and I can’t believe I am actually having this much fun.”
